Fruits of the Selfless Heart

Such simple words, so profound and universal a meaning: The Fruits of the Selfless Heart, based on a poem by Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

The fruit of silence is prayer.
The fruit of prayer is faith.
The fruit of faith is love.
The fruit of love is service.
The fruit of service is peace.

These words are set to music in Elizabeth Atkinson’s well-known SSAA composition, which includes the Latin rite’s invocation of Dona nobis pacem, performed here by participants in a summer fine arts camp choir.  Enjoy.

  1. Sean, I am the composer of “Fruits of the Selfless Heart.” I am so honored that you liked my piece enough to post it. The title is mine; Blessed Mother Teresa called her little poem “A Simple Path.” P.S. It’s not an arrangement; it is an original composition. Thank you!

  2. Thanks for the clarification, Elizabeth! Corrections made!

This is such a poignant piece of music, especially within the context of Blessed Mother Teresa’s story. I’ve heard it a number of times, never knowing who wrote it…and then a few months ago, the Washington Men’s Camerata performed it as TTBB — equally as powerful with men’s voices, I should note!
